Gakenke Natural - Burundi
Gakenke is a wonderful sweet natural process coffee from the Kayanza region of Burundi. This red bourbon varietal was manually picked by small lot farmers before processing at the Gakenke Central Washing Station. The highest quality cherries are then slowly dried for 3-4 weeks. The pickers periodically comb through the drying cherries for any defective cherries that were previously missed.
Coffee cultivation in Burundi is a tale of smallholder farmers cultivating 250 trees on average. Some of these trees, exclusively Red Bourbon, are more than 50 years old so farmers have developed amazing practices to get the most out of their aging rootstock. These skills allow the average producer to sell 200-300 kilos of coffee cherries annually.
This is a great coffee for all drip methods, but also approachable for those who love to pull shots at home. However, you brew we hope you enjoy the hard work of Burundi farmers. Slow Down and Enjoy!
